“Mr. Lythgoe’s answer to Ms. Abdul’s complaint is classic victim shaming,”  Abdul’s lawyers wrote in a statement obtained by Entertainment Weekly.

Lythgoe filed legal documents on Tuesday in which he presented past emails from Abdul that he believed displayed their friendly relationship while working together on “American Idol” and “So You Think You Can Dance.”

“Hi sweetheart — thank you for this lovely ‘gift.’ Please forgive me for not calling yesterday. Forever grateful to have you in my life! Love, love LOVE YOU! XO P,” read one message from Abdul.

But Abdul’s team says the past messages are “cherry-picked” and only showcase the power that Lythgoe held over his employee.

“Mr. Lythgoe fails to appreciate that he held a position of power over Ms. Abdul. He was a producer on ‘American Idol’ and ‘SYTYCD’ and she was the talent,” her attorneys stated.

“He held the cards to her career in his hand and he knew it. It thus is no surprise that Ms. Abdul placated to his ego with positive messaging and seeming adoration. These are the defenses that many women like Ms. Abdul had to adopt to deal with men who abuse their power.”

Representatives for Lythgoe did not immediately respond to a Daily News request for comment.

Abdul’s team also produced quotes from past messages that Lythgoe allegedly sent to Abdul, saying they evidenced varying levels of harassment.

“When you get back to LA will you please make love to me! Slowly and lovingly!” the producer allegedly wrote her in 2014.

“Is a small grope of the ass asking too much?” he allegedly asked in another text.

In a lawsuit filed last December, Abdul accused Lythgoe of groping and kissing her in a hotel elevator during an early season of “Idol,” saying he assaulted her again during a dinner at his home while they were working on “SYTYCD.”

Although Lythgoe’s team has called the accusations “pure fiction,” at least four other women have now come forward and filed lawsuits against him, claiming sexual assault and/or battery.

Drake Bell to discuss child sexual abuse at Nickelodeon in new doc https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/06/drake-bell-sexual-abuse-brian-peck-nickelodeon-docuseries/ Wed, 06 Mar 2024 13:23:57 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7563725 Former child actor Drake Bell says he was sexually abused while working for Nickelodeon in the early 2000s, as revealed in a new trailer for the upcoming Investigation Discovery series “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.”

The documentary, slated for release on March 17, is expected to feature interviews with several actors discussing the improper conduct of dialogue coach Brian Peck, according to Variety. Peck worked on multiple Nickelodeon shows.

A clip shared Tuesday shows Bell sitting down for an interview. The trailer’s context implies that Peck victimized him.

“The clip reveals that former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell will be sharing publicly, for the first time, the story of the abuse he suffered at the hands of Brian Peck, his former dialogue coach who was convicted in 2004 for his crimes against Drake and ordered to register as a sex offender,” Investigation Discovery confirmed in a press release.

Peck faced more than a dozen charges related to sexual abuse allegations in 2003. He later pleaded no contest to performing a lewd act with a 14- or 15-year-old and to oral copulation with a minor under 16. He served 16 months in prison.

On the Feb. 19 episode of the “Pod Meets World” podcast, former “Boy Meets World” actors Rider Strong and Will Friedle discussed working with Peck on the ABC show and the mistake of supporting him throughout his trial.

Friedle claimed Peck had asked for their support and told a version of the story that made it sound like he was innocent. However, Friedle says he quickly realized in court that he was on the wrong side.

“I just sat there wanting to die. It was like, ‘What the hell am I doing here?’ It was horrifying all the way around,” he said.

Bell, for his part, has had some legal trouble in recent years. He was convicted of child endangerment in 2021, for an improper relationship he allegedly had with a then-15-year-old.

The former actor also briefly went missing last year, and his family called the police over concerns that he was going to commit suicide.

Representatives for Bell and Peck did not immediately respond to a Daily News request for comment.

Illegal butane may be cause of deadly Michigan vape shop explosion https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/05/illegal-butane-may-be-cause-of-deadly-michigan-vape-shop-explosion/ Wed, 06 Mar 2024 03:27:49 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7563510 A series of explosions at a Michigan vape shop left one person dead on Monday, and authorities now believe the supplier had been illegally holding canisters of butane and other flammable materials.

Debris was flung as far as a mile away, according to officials in Clinton Township, a suburb north of Detroit where the shop was located, NBC News reported.

The 19-year-old who died in the incident has yet to be publicly identified. The victim was roughly a quarter mile down the road from the shop when a flying canister fatally hit the person in the head.

Firefighters had difficulty accessing the building to combat the blaze “due to the hundreds, if not thousands of explosions,” and one firefighter was also injured by another flying canister, said Clinton Township Fire Chief Tim Duncan.

“According to the (fire department), stored in the facility, among other items, were containers of butane, nitrous oxide, lighter fluid, and vape pens. Containers, or canisters, were 12 to 18 inches in size, weighing 10 to 15 pounds,” officials said in a Tuesday statement.

Authorities identified the shop as belonging to Goo LLC and confirmed that the retail business was permitted to be in operation with a small warehouse for storage purposes.

But in recent days, the site allegedly received a large shipment of butane, as well as propane, nitrous oxide and other products.

“We know they were not allowed to have these canisters,” Paul Brouwer, the township’s emergency management coordinator, said at a Tuesday press conference. “They were not permitted to have them in this building.”

The incident continues to be under investigation as authorities attempt to determine just how much illegal material was stored on site, according to Chief Duncan.

Duncan added that he believed Goo LLC had been supplying gas canisters for the local vaping industry, along with the sale of other products.

‘Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness accused of being ‘abusive monster’ in new exposé https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/05/jonathan-van-ness-allegations-rolling-stone-expose/ Wed, 06 Mar 2024 01:24:48 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7562925 Jonathan Van Ness, the beloved grooming expert on Netflix hit “Queer Eye,” is in reality a “monster” with severe “rage issues,” according to an exposé published Tuesday by Rolling Stone.

“[There’s] a real emotion of fear around them when they get angry,” a source said of Van Ness, who uses they/them pronouns. “It’s almost like a cartoon where it oozes out of them. It’s intense and scary.”

The publication spoke with over 10 anonymous sources from the “Queer Eye” production team and others who have worked with Van Ness, with many claiming the star’s nasty behavior was creating so much toxicity behind the scenes that the other castmates were becoming hesitant to film with Van Ness.

Four people who held prominent roles on the production referred to Van Ness, 36, as a “monster,” a “nightmare” and “demeaning.”

Seven others told Rolling Stone the star would lash out at crew members, making filming “difficult in any capacity.”

“At least once a day, they would need to yell at somebody,” a source said. “It might be something small, but there’s always going to be somebody to point out and blame and make the villain of the day.”

Their “unprofessional” behavior and need to be the center of the show also sowed significant animosity amongst the other stars.

“[Van Ness] didn’t want to ever share the spotlight with anyone,” another source added. “There were times when we couldn’t even shoot scenes with certain members of the Fab Five together because it got so bad.”

Those certain members reportedly included interior design expert Bobby Berk, who announced in November his decision to leave the production after season 8, which recently premiered on Netflix.

Berk elaborated on his departure in a recent profile for Vanity Fair, discussing contract negotiations and a rumored rift with fashion expert Tan France, but didn’t make mention of any issues with Van Ness.

Commonly identified by their initials JVN, the grooming expert and internet personality has hosted the show since 2018 and is also a podcaster, bestselling author, comedian and owner of a line of non-gendered haircare products.

“Jonathan’s a person who contains multitudes and who has the capacity to be very warm, very charismatic, and has the capacity to make you feel really special that they are paying attention to you,” another source told Rolling Stone — though that persona appears to be constructed.

“There’s a real contrast between that and the way that they treat the people who are closest to them across the board,” said another insider who worked with Van Ness. “It’s the opposite of what this person is touted and paid to be.”

Reps for Van Ness have not yet replied to a request for comment on the accusations.

Missing NJ hiker found safe but disoriented by NY homeowner using Ring camera https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/05/missing-new-jersey-hiker-found-ring-camera-ringwood-state-park/ Tue, 05 Mar 2024 22:38:07 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7562607 A 63-year-old woman who went missing while hiking in New Jersey has been located without apparent injury, after a New York resident spotted her on their home’s Ring camera.

Carol Heimbach, of Wayne, N.J., initially disappeared during her hike Sunday afternoon in Ringwood State Park, in Passaic County. When she still hadn’t turned up by 10 p.m. that night, her family phoned police.

A search party was sent out around 1 a.m., and at least 10 teams explored the area well into Monday morning, according to CBS News.

Later the same day, a resident in Sloatsburg, N.Y., located roughly 5 miles from Ringwood State Park, spotted Heimbach on their doorbell camera and notified authorities.

“It is important to thank the community with this, because had they not had the wherewithal and paid attention to the Facebook page … This individual obviously took the time, recognized, was aware of the situation and appropriately called the authorities to where we can get this to a positive resolution,” said New Jersey State Park Police Chief George Fedorczyk.

Police reported Heimbach was safe and uninjured, but appeared disoriented. She was driven to the hospital to be evaluated.

She’s reportedly now back at home and recovering after having spent an entire night alone in the woods.

Heimbach, who was identified by multiple outlets after police shared a photo of her on their Facebook page, was a frequent hiker and even volunteered at the state park, according to local law enforcement.

Authorities noted that she’d left her cellphone in her car before her hike, although it’s unclear if that was intentional or if it contributed to Heimbach losing her way.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones ordered to take paternity test https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/29/jerry-jones-paternity-test-cowboys-owner-father/ Fri, 01 Mar 2024 04:31:19 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7553180 Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones must take a paternity test, according to a ruling handed down Wednesday, ESPN reported.

It’s the latest development in the ongoing legal dispute between the billionaire owner and 27-year-old Alexandra Davis, who claims to be his biological daughter.

In 1998, an alleged agreement was made between her mother, Cynthia Davis, and the Cowboys owner, that said Jones would financially support the family as long as he was never identified as the father. Jones denies the allegations.

Alexandra Davis was attempting to have the agreement voided in court in a 2022 lawsuit, but she later dropped the case in favor of having Jones take a paternity test to prove her claim.

Judge Sandra Jackson’s Wednesday ruling was a “huge victory,” said Davis’ lawyer Kris Hayes.

“Alex is in a position where she really no longer has to hide her truth or live under the thumb of fear and maybe she’s going to finally get some peace and we hope other families will have that same benefit from the judge following the law,” the attorney stated.

The relationship between Jones and Davis’ mother allegedly occurred in the 90s, when the football powerhouse was already long married to his wife Gene and Davis’ mother was also married.

Attorneys representing the 81-year-old mogul argued that the Texas law compelling genetic testing is unconstitutional, saying Cynthia Davis’ husband at the time should be legally presumed her true father.

The 27-year-old has already received “millions of dollars” from Jones, according to his attorneys.

The original settlement reportedly required Jones to pay $375,000 to Cynthia Davis plus lump sum payments from a trust to Alexandra as she aged.

Alleged Pentagon leaker Jack Teixeira expected to plead guilty https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/29/jack-teixeira-pentagon-leaker-guilty-plea/ Fri, 01 Mar 2024 01:39:32 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7552916 Jack Teixeira, the Air National Guardsman accused of leaking classified military documents online, is expected to plead guilty next week, according to a court filing obtained Thursday.

The development marks a reverse of course for the 22-year-old, who pleaded not guilty in June to six counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information. He faced up to 10 years in prison for each count.

Although the filing Thursday did not specify which charges Teixeira might plead guilty to, the Justice Department has formally asked for a change-of-plea hearing scheduled for March 4, meaning the Teixeira will likely plead guilty in the case.

A source close of the situation also told CNN he intends to change his plea.

Teixeira, of North Dighton, Mass., has remained behind bars since his arrest last April for what’s considered to be the most significant breach of intelligence in years.

He’s accused of releasing classified papers pertaining to Russia’s war in Ukraine, as well as other sensitive national security material on social media gaming site Discord.

Investigators said he was the leader of an exclusive chat group named Thug Shaker Central, where users shared jokes, debated their favorite types of guns and discussed current topics including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In January, Teixeira allegedly began sharing classified secrets with the Discord group, typing out sensitive documents and then sharing full photographs of the material.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said Teixeira had been trusted with material “that reasonably could be expected to cause exceptionally grave damage to national security if shared.”

Last May, a magistrate judge ruled that he must be kept behind bars as he waits for his case to play out, claiming there was a pertinent risk that he would attempt to flee in the event he was released, or potentially obstruct justice.

When he was indicted a month later on federal felony charges, prosecutors claimed Teixeira had a history of violent rhetoric, citing old social media posts in which he said he wished to kill “a ton of people.”

Months before his arrest, he had allegedly been caught by military colleagues taking notes on classified information and viewing intelligence material that was unrelated to his job.

Escaped Philly prisoner Alleem Borden nabbed after 4 days on the run https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/29/escaped-philadelphia-prisoner-alleem-borden-captured-arrested/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 23:21:16 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7552380 U.S. Marshals have captured Alleem Borden, the escaped Philadelphia prisoner who had been on the run since Monday, after locating him hiding in a home in western Pennsylvania’s Cambria County.

Law enforcement arrived at the 300 block of Davis Street in Johnstown, where a woman answered the door and “confirmed Borden was presently in the home,” Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Robert Clark said during a Thursday press conference.

The 29-year-old car theft suspect was then discovered in an attic crawl space and “forcibly removed,” Clark added. He was taken to Cambria County prison where he’ll stay until he’s transferred back to Philadelphia in the coming days.

It’s unclear how exactly authorities came to determine Borden was in the home, but Clark said there was information that connected him to the woman who owned the residence.

Police previously spotted Borden in West Philly on Tuesday and had given chase before he escaped by hopping onto SEPTA tracks and taking off on foot.

During his time on the run, Borden had somehow removed the handcuffs he were wearing when he escaped. He was considered “possibly armed, dangerous and undoubtedly desperate,” according to Clark.

It had been roughly four days since he escaped custody as he was being discharged from Temple University’s Episcopal Hospital and escorted toward a police vehicle.

Borden had been accused of stealing a Hyundai Elantra as the car’s owner was making a food delivery last Thursday, according to an arrest affidavit. He was taken into custody the following Sunday after law enforcement allegedly found him sleeping in the vehicle in Fishtown.

When he complained of pain during his processing, authorities took him to the hospital to be examined, but he later fled the scene.

It wasn’t the first time the 29-year-old attempted to escape police custody.

In April 2020, officers discovered a sedan Borden was driving had been reported stolen. Upon police attempting to arrest him, he allegedly pulled away and shoved an officer to the ground. He later pleaded guilty to charges of resisting arrest and flight to avoid apprehension in the case.

Texas inmate executed despite maintaining innocence in double murder https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/28/texas-ivan-cantu-executed-murder-innocence/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 03:51:17 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7550462 A prisoner in the Huntsville, Tex., state penitentiary was executed Wednesday for a double-murder that he long denied committing.

Ivan Cantu, 50, received a lethal injection more than two decades after he was convicted of fatally shooting his cousin, James Mosqueda, and his cousin’s girlfriend, Amy Kitchen.

“I’d like to address the Kitchens and Mosqueda families. I want you to know that I never killed James and Amy,” the inmate said in his final statement, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

“And if I did, if I knew who did, you would’ve been the first to know any information I would’ve had that would’ve helped to bring justice to James and Amy,” he added.

Cantu has long claimed that he was convicted on false testimony and questionable evidence, saying he was framed by men who were really responsible for the crime.

In 2001, prosecutors argued that Cantu killed Mosqueda, a 27-year-old drug dealer, and Kitchen, 22, as he tried to steal cocaine, marijuana and cash from Mosqueda’s home in Dallas.

The inmate claimed that the killings were truly carried out by a rival drug dealer who was angry over a monetary dispute.

Despite petitioning two lower courts to stay his execution, both dismissed the request on Tuesday, with one arguing that new evidence presented was “not credible,” and the other denying the request on procedural grounds without reviewing the evidence.

During the original investigation in 2000, police found bloody jeans with the victims’ DNA in Cantu’s apartment. His gun, which had Mosqueda’s blood on the barrel and Cantu’s fingerprints on its magazine, was found at a different location.

One of Cantu’s trial attorneys later claimed that Cantu admitted to him “he had indeed killed Mosqueda for ‘ripping him off’ on a drug deal.”

Cantu’s then-girlfriend, Amy Boettcher, testified during the trial that Cantu told her he intended to kill Mosqueda and Kitchen and brought her to the crime scene after the murders.

“I remain fully convinced that Ivan Cantu brutally murdered two innocent victims in 2000,” said Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis, whose office was responsible for the conviction in 2001.

Ryan Gosling to perform hit ‘Barbie’ song ‘I’m Just Ken’ live at the 2024 Academy Awards https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/28/ryan-gosling-im-just-ken-oscars-performance/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 00:47:32 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7549896 Ryan Gosling will take the stage for a live performance of the hit “Barbie” song “I’m Just Ken” at March 10’s Academy Awards, according to a Wednesday announcement from show execs.

The ballad, written by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, is nominated for Best Original Song at this year’s ceremony and all five songs in the category will reportedly be performed during the broadcast.

That list of nominees includes another “Barbie” hit, “What Was I Made For” (performed by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell), as well as “The Fire Inside” from “Flamin’ Hot” (Becky G), “It Never Went Away” from “American Symphony” (Jon Batiste) and “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)” from “Killers of the Flower Moon” (Scott George and the Osage Singers).

“What Was I Made For” — the clear-cut favorite to take home the prize — won Song of the Year at the 2024 Grammys earlier this month.

The live rendition of “I’m Just Ken” will mark the first time Gosling, 43, will perform at the Academy Awards. Despite singing “City of Stars” in 2017’s “La La Land,” the Oscar-nominated song was later performed at the ceremony by supporting star John Legend, rather than by Gosling and co-star Emma Stone.

Gosling is also nominated for Best Supporting Actor at this year’s show, and was previously up for Best Actor for his role in 2007’s “Half Nelson” and 10 years later for “La La Land.”

While March 10 could be Gosling’s first Oscar win, Robert Downey Jr., who’s also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his work in “Oppenheimer,” has been sweeping the current awards season.

The 58-year-old actor hasn’t won an Oscar yet either, but he’s already taken home a Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG Award this year for his role as former U.S. government official Lewis Strauss.

According to Screen Rant, the last seven actors to win the SAG Award for their supporting role have gone on to win the Oscar.

The 96th Annual Academy Awards will be broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, beginning on Sunday, March 10 at 7 p.m. ET and airing on ABC. Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel is set to lead the event.
