Authorities did not immediately identify the suspect but told Boston 25 News that the person had been taken into custody at around 4:30 p.m. after a holding out for roughly nine hours against law enforcement officers, including a SWAT team.

The officers and agents had descended on the home in Hyannis earlier in the day to investigate reports of a person being held at knifepoint, according to a statement from the Barnstable Police Department. Authorities evacuated nearby neighbors and residents as the crisis also triggered lockdowns for several schools in the Cape Cod area.

When they arrived on the scene just after 7:30 a.m., officers learned the occupants of the home had been allowed to leave, but that the suspect, armed with a knife, was still barricaded inside.

A shelter-in-place order was sent out for a 1-mile radius of the incident, and police evacuated homes nearby for emergency purposes.

Five schools across Barnstable were also placed under lockdown as authorities worked to negotiate with the suspect.

“No one is permitted into our schools or to exit them, but school operations within the building will continue,” a district spokesperson told Boston 25. “This is as a result of police activity in the Hyannis area.”

Authorities emphasized the lockdown measures were precautionary. By 10:30 a.m., school officials were informed there was no longer any danger because the suspect was “contained to his home.”

Crime scene photo accidentally posted online after Madeline Soto discovery https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/06/madeline-soto-crime-scene-photo-investigation/ Wed, 06 Mar 2024 18:32:50 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7564318 The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office in Florida is facing an investigation after a confidential crime scene photo — which included a dead body — was accidentally posted online following the discovery of the remains of 13-year-old Madeline Soto.

The image in question appeared on Sheriff Marcos López’s Instagram page over the weekend amid a series of snapshots of a community event for seniors. It featured a corpse dressed in a green top and blue jeans — an outfit matching the description of what Madeline was likely wearing when she was initially reported missing last week, Click Orlando reported.

“Great day with our seniors,” the caption of the post read, which also included a smiley face and an angel emoji.

Authorities have not confirmed whether it was Madeline in the photo, which has since been scrubbed from social media.

Florida State Attorney Andrew Bain’s Office has since asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate. The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office vowed to cooperate in the probe and has offered an apology for posting the photo.

“On March 2, 2024, a post was made on social media about a community event for seniors. In the post, an investigative photo was accidentally included,” an unnamed spokesperson in the sheriff’s office told the Orlando Sentinel. “The photo was immediately removed. We deeply apologize for any confusion or disturbance this may have caused. As with any investigation, the information obtained is confidential and any mistaken disclosures will be immediately rectified.”

Search teams located Madeline’s body in rural St. Cloud on Friday, less than 24 hours before the crime scene image appeared online. The teen was first reported missing on Feb. 26.

Authorities initially believed her mother’s 37-year-old boyfriend, Stephan Sterns, dropped her off a few blocks from Hunter’s Creek Middle School in Orlando — but they later determined she was never even in the vicinity of her school that morning.

Sterns was arrested Feb. 28 for sexual battery and possession of child sexual abuse material. While the charges are not related to Madeline’s case, authorities have dubbed Sterns the prime suspect.

No murder charges have yet been filed in connection with the teen’s slaying.

The Kissimmee Police Department, which is investigating Madeline’s death and disappearance, declined to comment on the photo posted by López.

“Our detectives and forensic unit are working tirelessly to uncover the truth behind this heartbreaking incident” the police department said in a post on X Wednesday. “At this time, we are unable to release any further information as this remains an active investigation.”

Third SEPTA bus-related shooting in 3 days kills 1 https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/06/philadelphia-deadly-septa-bus-shootings/ Wed, 06 Mar 2024 16:45:32 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7564030 For the third time in as many days, a SEPTA rider was shot and killed either on a bus or at a stop in Philadelphia, police said.

The most recent incident unfolded Tuesday night onboard a Route 79 bus near South Broad Street and Snyder Avenue, Fox 29 reported. While few details have been provided, authorities said an argument preceded the deadly confrontation, which began around 6:40 p.m.

The 37-year-old victim, whose name has not yet been released, suffered at least two gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Jefferson University Hospital-Center City, where he was later pronounced dead, WPVI reported.

Police said the shooter managed to flee the area, after getting off the bus and heading into the Snyder Station along the Broad Street Line. No weapons were recovered at the scene.

The bloody bus violence came a day after Dayemen Taylor, a 17-year-old student at Imhotep Institute Charter High School, was shot in North Philadelphia on Monday around 3:45 p.m. The teen had just finished school for the day and was waiting at a stop in the city’s Ogontz neighborhood when two people, at least one of whom had an automatic weapon, fired at the group.

Dayemen was shot and taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he died from his injuries, police said. Another two teens, both 15, suffered from graze wounds.

Two “innocent bystanders” who were inside the bus at the time of the incident were also wounded, according to authorities, though not critically.

“A juvenile who has now lost his life, we have a 70-year-old woman. Excuse me,” Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said during a press conference Tuesday, pausing to contain his emotion.

“We have a 70-year-old woman with a grocery cart on a bus who was struck in the head with a bullet and survived, most likely, because of the thickness of the glass and movement of the bus,” he continued. “We have another person on this bus, and I’m not going to say who, who is a medical worker, who spends time caring, among others, for victims of shootings. We have other young people shot in this process. This is an absolute outrage.

Police have said they believe the shooting on Monday was a targeted attack.

On Sunday night, a man was also shot and killed exiting a SEPTA bus in Northeast Philadelphia. Authorities raced to Castor Avenue, near Van Kirk Street, in the Oxford Circle, where they discovered 27-year-old Sawee Kofa on the ground with gunshot wounds to his face and chest. He was pronounced dead minutes later.

No arrests have been made in connection with any of the recent SEPTA shootings.

Philadelphia Air Force veteran, 88, killed in broad-day shooting https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/06/air-force-veteran-killed-shooting-in-philadelphia/ Wed, 06 Mar 2024 14:18:04 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7563980 An 88-year-old grandfather and Air Force veteran was fatally shot in broad daylight while sitting in his car in West Philadelphia, police said.

The victim, identified by family members Richard Butler, was in a white Hyundai Santa Fe on the 100 block of North Dewey Street when the shooting started, WPVI reported. According to home surveillance video obtained by the news station, the gunman exited a silver sedan on Tuesday around 1:35 p.m., ran up to Butler’s car and unleashed several rounds.

Despite being struck in the chest twice, Butler attempted to drive away. His vehicle eventually jumped the curb of a nearby sidewalk, hitting and tipping over a plant, before coming to a full stop.

Bystanders attempted to break into the vehicle to help Butler in the moments after the shooting. Sources told NBC 10 the group used a tire iron to shatter the driver’s side window and gain access to the wounded grandfather. He was then rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just before 2 p.m.

“You know my father never bothered nobody,” the victim’s son, Orlando Butler, told the news station. “He’s just a retired military vet. He’s been an outstanding citizen in the community. Took care of all the kids from the block. For this to happen to my father, this is truly a sad situation.”

Butler, who spent years in the Air Force, was also a retired SEPTA driver. His family said he was also an essential member of the community.

“This man did nothing to anyone and he gave to everyone,” Minette Finn, Butler’s great niece, said.

So far, authorities have not provided any details about the suspected shooter, nor have they revealed a potential motive for the gun violence. They are hoping security and surveillance cameras in the area will lend more insight into the deadly shooting.

Search intensifies for Sebastian Rogers, missing Tenn. teen with autism https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/05/sebastian-rogers-tennessee-teen-missing-autism/ Tue, 05 Mar 2024 20:27:57 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7562427 A search was underway in Tennessee on Tuesday for Sebastian Rogers, a 15-year-old with autism who has been missing since last week.

Sebastian was reported missing on Feb. 26, triggering an Amber Alert that warned the boy “has a medical condition that may impair his ability to return safely without assistance.” The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation TBI has also since issued an “Endangered Child Alert” for the missing teen.

Sebastian was last seen in the area of Stafford Court in Hendersonville wearing “a black sweatshirt, black sweatpants, and glasses.” In the days since his disappearance, hundreds of first responders and search crews have scoured the region. Their efforts also included blasting the teen’s favorite song, “Eye of the Tiger,” in a bid to guide him back home.

“We tried playing that to kind of call him and let him know we’re here to help,” Deputy Chief Eric Craddock with The Sumner County Sheriff’s Department told WKRN.

“I’m sure that he could see what’s going on here and be intimidated. But if he sees this newscast, I want him to know: Sebastian come out, we’re here to help you. We just wanna get you home safe.”

The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office has also called on the community for help in locating Sebastian.

“If you wish to contribute, we kindly ask you to carefully check your property, including crawl spaces, sheds, small areas, and any other locations where a child who enjoys hiding might be,” the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities have additionally asked residents to search through any surveillance video they may have, specifically during the hours between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.

Sebastian is described as a white male with brown hair and brown eyes weighing 120 pounds and standing at 5 feet, 5 inches. Anyone with information has been asked to call Sumner County Emergency Communications Center at 615-451-3838 or the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-TBI-FIND.

Pregnant Amish woman Rebekah Byler found with throat slit, ‘scalping’ wound: documents https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/05/pregnant-amish-woman-murder-rebekah-byler-throat-slit-scalping/ Tue, 05 Mar 2024 18:24:25 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7562221 Rebekah Byler, a pregnant Amish woman found murdered inside her Pennsylvania home last week, had her throat sliced open and a “scalping type wound on her head,” according to court documents.

Her husband, 24-year-old Andy Byler, and a family friend, identified as Julie Warner, had only just returned to the residence in Sparta Township on Feb. 26 when they discovered Rebekah’s body, according to an affidavit of probable cause cited by NBC News.

They found her lying on her back in a pool of her own blood in the living room, per the 911 call placed by Warner.

Byler’s two children, ages 2 and 3, were also in the house when her body was discovered but they were not physically harmed in the grisly attack.

Police previously said Rebekah, who was six months pregnant, additionally suffered a gunshot wound.

Investigators have since recovered three firearms — a .22-caliber rifle and a pair of shotguns — bullets and two spent casings from the crime scene. They also found broken knife parts, including the orange handle of a knife, a broken knife blade and a bone-handled knife, according to an inventory made public on Tuesday.

A white bonnet, as well as the contents of an ashtray and trash bin, were also listed among the evidence.

On Saturday, authorities announced they’d detained Shawn Cranston in connection with the slaying. The 52-year-old suspect is facing charges including criminal homicide, criminal homicide of an unborn child, burglary and criminal trespass, Pennsylvania State Police said.

He has not yet entered a plea and is currently being held without bond at the Crawford County Jail.

It’s unclear whether any of the weapons found at scene belong to Cranston, a Corry resident who lives some 8 miles from the Bylers.

Authorities have so far provided few details regarding what triggered the arrest, citing only interviews and evidence collected amid the investigation. A motive for the slaying, which rocked the tight-knit neighborhood in western Pennsylvania, was also unclear.

Scores of Amish traveled on Thursday to the Byler residence, located along a dirt road in a very remote farming area, to pay their respects. The stretch of road, which is particularly dark after nightfall due in part to the community’s forgoing of technology, was illuminated by lights on arriving buggies, all of them carrying mourners and well-wishers.

Sparta Township is a small township in Crawford County, just outside of the borough of Spartansburg and about 35 miles southeast of Erie, Pa.

Detroit industrial fire and explosions kills 1, firefighter injured https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/05/detroit-industrial-fire-explosions-select-distributors/ Tue, 05 Mar 2024 16:46:39 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7562056 A 19-year-old is dead after a massive industrial fire in Detroit resulted in a series of explosions, blasting debris as far as a mile away, police said.

First responders were called to Select Distributors, which supplies novelties, phone accessories and other merchandise, Monday night. When they arrived on the scene around 8:50 p.m., officers “observed exploding materials flying in all directions from the building,” the Clinton Township Police Department said in a press release early Tuesday morning.

As firefighters battled back the flames, authorities cordoned off the area and “established a perimeter of security” before they “proceeded to evacuate area residents and businesses.”

Fire Chief Tim Duncan said four people were working inside the building Monday night. They reported hearing popping sounds and safely fled just minutes before the building exploded, sending hundreds of heavy metal canisters and other debris into the air. It rained down on the roadways of 15 Mile and Groesbeck, which were closed down on Tuesday amid cleanup efforts, the Macomb Daily reported.

During a press briefing Tuesday morning, Duncan told reporters a man, 19, was struck by a piece of shrapnel and rushed to the hospital. He was pronounced dead around 4 a.m. A firefighter also sustained minor injuries while “both a police vehicle and fire vehicle sustained damage from the exploding projectile cannisters,” according to a news release from authorities.

No further details were provided about the victims.

Around 11 p.m., Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel told reporters the blaze was mostly under control, though crews continued to battle back some flames early Tuesday morning. Authorities noted that they did not know what was burning or the potential health effects, but said Select Distributors was “known to stock combustible materials” and urged people in the area to stay inside.

While it’s also unclear what sparked the fire, Duncan said the flames caused butane canisters at the facility, located at 19100 15 Mile Road, to explode. The blaze remains under investigation.

5 killed in fiery plane crash along Nashville highway https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/05/nashville-plane-crash-interstate-40/ Tue, 05 Mar 2024 14:05:17 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7561965 A single-engine plane exploded into flames as it crashed along Interstate 40 East in Nashville, killing all five people on board, authorities said.

The pilot was granted permission to make an emergency landing at John C. Tune Airport after reporting engine trouble on Monday around 7:40 p.m., Metro Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron said. A short time later, the pilot reported they would not be able to make it there.

The plane crashed about three miles away from the airport. Authorities are still working to determine where it originated from.

“That impact was catastrophic and did not leave any survivors,” Nashville Fire Department spokesperson Kendra Loney said.

None of the victims has been identified.

Dramatic video shared on social media shows the small plane surrounded by clouds of smoke and completely engulfed in flames in a grassy area behind a Costco alongside I-40 East. Other images posted online show the mangled remains of the aircraft.

Those who witnessed the plane in the moments before the crash reported that it was “obviously in distress as it was coming over the interstate,” Aaron said.

“We are fortunate the aircraft did not hit any buildings as it went down,” he added.

The fiery crash forced the closure of I-40 East at mile marker 202 overnight, Tennessee Department of Transportation Region 3 spokeswoman Rebekah Hammonds said on X. All lanes were reopened as of Tuesday morning, though commuters should still expect delays, she said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are assisting in the probe, Nashville police said.

Sentenced commuted for former Kansas City Chiefs coach Britt Reid after DWI crash https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/02/britt-reid-commuted-sentence-dwi-crash/ Sat, 02 Mar 2024 21:35:37 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7557292 Missouri Gov. Mike Parson on Friday commuted the sentence of former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid — son of head coach Andy Reid — some three years after a drunk-driving crash left a 5-year-old with a serious brain injury.

Reid was sentenced to three years behind bars in November 2022, after he pleaded guilty to a single felony count of driving while intoxicated as part of a deal with prosecutors.

His commutation, one of three announced by Parson on Friday, means he will serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, according to a press release from the governor’s office.

Johnathan Shiflett, a spokesperson for Parson, said the governor considered several factors when shortening Reid’s sentence, including that he “completed his alcohol abuse treatment program and has served more prison time than most individuals convicted of similar offenses.” He added that Reid will remain under house arrest until Oct. 31, 2025, with requirements for weekly meetings with a parole officer and peer support sponsor and attendance at behavioral counseling.

The former Chiefs coach will additionally be required to work at least 30 hours a week and complete 10 hours a month of community service, according to Shiflett.

Prosecutors said Reid was driving over 80 mph on Feb. 4, 2021 when he slammed into two vehicles stopped on the side of an exit ramp along Interstate 435, not far the Chiefs’ practice facility. One of the vehicles had earlier stalled due to a dead battery, while the second had showed up to help.

Four adults and two children were inured in collision, including 5-year-old Ariel Young, who sustained a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma for 11 days.

Britt was also injured in the crash.

In the aftermath, he admitted to drinking before he got behind the wheel. Authorities determined his blood alcohol level was 0.113% two hours after the crash, nearly double the legal limit of 0.08%.

Governor Parson, a former sheriff, has now granted clemency to more than 760 people since 2020. He is also a longtime Chiefs season ticket-holder and celebrated with the team after their recent Super Bowl win.

Freight train derails into river in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/02/train-derailment-bethlehem-pa/ Sat, 02 Mar 2024 19:03:50 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7557107 A freight train careened off the tracks in eastern Pennsylvania early Saturday morning, leaving at least one railroad car partially submerged in the Lehigh River.

The derailment occurred near Bethlehem around 4:15 a.m., according to a statement on Nancy Run Fire Company’s Facebook page. Images shared alongside the social media post show a black Norfolk Southern freight tangled around itself and off the tracks running along Riverside Drive in Lower Saucon Township.

It was not clear how many railroad cars were involved in the incident. No injuries or hazardous materials had been reported by Saturday afternoon.

“There are currently no evacuations, no injuries, and no leaks from any containers,” Northampton County’s executive, Lamont McClure, said. “Northampton County Emergency Management as well as the Lehigh County Hazmat team are on site and providing support.”

McClure also urged residents to avoid the area while first responders continue their work at the site.

Several of those residents reporting hearing the crash, saying they were woken up thinking it was thunder.

In a statement to CBS News, Norfolk Southern said its “crews and contractors are on-scene and developing a clean-up plan.”

The transport company has suffered several train derailments in the last few years, including one involving hazardous materials in East Palestine, Ohio, on the border with Pennsylvania. The incident, which occurred on Feb. 3, 2023, saw 38 cars of the 151-car train tip over. Another 12 caught fire.

In the year since, residents have suffered myriad health problems they believe to be related to the smoke and toxic chemicals released into the air.

Around 3,500 small fish across 7.5 miles of streams also died in the chemical spill resulting from the crash.
