A cluster of cases of the contagious virus quickly spread among an eight-person family in Hunterdon County, the state department of health said Tuesday.

The original infection could be tied to recent international travel, officials said.

No other details about the case were released due to privacy laws.

People with the mumps quickly start exhibiting symptoms, including fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite.

After several days, the salivary glands can swell, causing puffy cheeks and other discomfort in the face. It can also cause swelling of the brain, testicles, ovaries or breast tissue, which could lead to a number of other complications including brain inflammation, infertility or deafness.

The New Jersey Department of Health advised residents to get vaccinated against mumps, measles and rubella if they hadn’t done so already.

“These viruses are incredibly contagious, so if you suspect you may have measles, mumps, or rubella, it is important to call ahead before visiting any health care provider or facility so they can take special precautions,” acting health commissioner Dr. Kaitlan Baston said in a statement.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of mumps cases fluctuates year-to-year. There were 436 cases reported in the country last year.

“As a physician and as a mom, I understand what it is like to try to keep your kids and your family healthy,” Baston said. “The best way to keep you and your loved ones safe is to get the MMR shot. If you or your family have not gotten the shot, now is the time.”

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. in Butler Township, about 35 miles north of Pittsburgh, when Lee Ann Galante went outside to check on her barking dog.

Galante, 55, discovered her dog in an altercation with a black bear accompanied by three cubs. As she attempted to separate her dog, she was bitten on the head. She also suffered injuries to her face, neck and both arms.

Galante managed to free herself and got back inside her house with the dog, which was unharmed. She was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for treatment of her injuries and is expected to leave in good condition.

The mother bear was euthanized at the scene after continuing to be aggressive, the Pennsylvania Game Commission said. The cubs were tranquilized and transported to an undisclosed location. They may be tagged and released into an wilderness area, though a spokesperson for the commission told WTAE that they’re “leaning more towards caution and probably euthanizing these cubs to test them for rabies just in case.”

“This is a first for me and first for the area,” Sgt. Thomas Vensel of the Butler Township Police told CBS Pittsburgh. “Talked to some people [who said] they’d been seeing [bears] in the area. Obviously, there was a bird feeder up here that was knocked down. We had warm weather lately, so I’m assuming these animals are out and about.”

One neighbor told TribLive she had seen a bear in the area at least 10 times within the last month, while another’s doorbell camera captured four bears rummaging through trash cans.

Officials advised homeowners to bring bird feeders, pets, pet food and trash indoors at night since bears are leaving hibernation and looking for food. People should also not get between a mother bear and their cubs.

Johannes Vulto, 64, and his company, Vulto Creamery, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of causing the introduction of adulterated food into interstate for selling and distributing the raw milk cheese linked to a 2016-2017 listeria outbreak, the Justice Department said.

Listeria is a serious bacterial infection caused by eating contaminated foods. Pregnant women, newborns, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk of becoming severely ill if infected.

“An estimated 1,600 people get listeriosis each year, and about 260 die,” according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The cheeses had been sold across the country, primarily in Whole Foods Markets. The deaths occurred in Connecticut and Vermont.

According to the complaint, multiple sanitation issues were found at the company’s Walton, N.Y. plant, where Vulto himself oversaw operations, and bacteria was found in the cheeses.

“U.S. consumers rely on the FDA to ensure that their food is safe and wholesome,” Special Agent in Charge Fernando McMillan of FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations New York Field Office said. “When companies and individuals put themselves above the law by producing food that endangers and harms the public, as occurred in this case, we will see that they are brought to justice.”

Vulto is scheduled to be sentenced in July. He faces up to a year in prison, an additional year of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000. The company may be fined as much as $500,000.

The unlikely duo? Golden Star Warriors star Steph Curry and his wife, cookbook author Ayesha Curry — themselves the parents of three, with a fourth on the way.

During the interview, host Jimmy Fallon brought out a photo of Curry, Lohan, and Lohan’s husband, Bader Shammas, posing with an autographed Curry jersey after a game in Atlanta.

The Clinton Police Department said Tuesday it responded to a noise complaint at the Clinton Premium Outlets around 10:35 p.m. after the shops had closed.

Upon arrival, officers found several people, one of whom told police he’d been threatened with a gun and brought from New Rochelle, N.Y. to Clinton.

A police dog later found a fake gun that had been tossed into the nearby woods. A baseball bat, police-issued pepper spray and ski masks were also recovered.

The man who was allegedly kidnapped was taken to the hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

Six men and three minors were arrested and hit with a bevy of charges, including first-degree kidnapping with a firearm, illegal use of a facsimile firearm, unlawful restraint, robbery, assault and threatening. Police said that one of the men is from Stamford, Conn. and the rest of the accused are from New York.

The adults’ bond was set at $250,000 and the minors were taken to the Bridgeport Juvenile Detention Center. It’s unclear if any of them have been released.

“The kidnapping appears to have been a targeted and isolated incident with the victim being known to the offenders,” Sgt. Spencer Mangs told Patch. “There is no ongoing threat to the public.”

No other details about the incident were made available.

The NatGeo star’s official Facebook page announced the news.

“It is with the deepest sadness we report that Charlie Griffin and his beloved dog, Leila, have passed away in a boating accident today,” the post reads. “Please keep family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. We will forever remember Griff!”

Griffin appeared in seasons 2-5 of “Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks,” which featured the captain and his crew fishing for bluefin tuna off the coast of North Carolina.

The fisherman had been taking his 35-foot recreational boat from Virginia Beach to Wanchese, N.C. for repairs but went missing some time Sunday evening.

The U.S. Coast Guard was dispatched after the report of the overdue vessel, finding it capsized near Pea Island in the Outer Banks on Monday morning. Griffin and Leila were found dead on the island having washed ashore, according to The Outer Banks Voice.

“Officers are still searching for a second occupant that was aboard the vessel,” the maritime service branch said.

That person was described as a 36-year-old man wearing a camouflage T-shirt and sweatshirt, khaki shorts and gray rubber work boots.

No other details about the incident were released.

The exercise equipment maker, known for its ubiquitous commercials, announced it also entered into a purchase agreement to sell itself for $37.5 million to Taiwan-based Johnson Health Tech, but left the door open for higher bids.

In February, the company warned investors there was “substantial doubt” it could stay in business.

BowFlex cited the “post-pandemic environment” for its bankruptcy, but said the sales agreement would ensure its employees keep getting paid as the process plays out. The new buyer will ultimately decide how many workers lose their jobs. The company laid off 15% of its workers last summer.

“For decades, BowFlex has empowered healthier living and enabled consumers to reach their fitness goals with our innovative home fitness products and individualized connected fitness experiences,” CEO Jim Barr said in a statement Tuesday.

“As a result of the post-pandemic environment and persistent macroeconomic headwinds, we conducted a comprehensive strategic review and determined this was the best path forward for our company,” said Barr. “We are fortified by the potential partnership with Johnson Health Tech and encouraged by the multiple parties that have indicated an interest in bidding for our company.”

Last year, the company sold the rights to the name Nautilus. In 2009, it sold the StairMaster brand to Core Health & Fitness, which owns brands like Schwinn and JRNY.

Peloton has similarly seen its sales and subscriptions slow in recent months as exercisers flock back to gyms for their workouts.

Jonte Davis, 33, was found by police officers suffering from gunshot wounds around 1:45 p.m. in Warren, about 60 miles southeast of Cleveland, on Saturday. He was transported to Trumbull Regional Medical Center where he later died.

The killer shot Davis from another vehicle, the Warren Police Department stated.

The attacker’s vehicle was found in the driveway of a residence hours later.

“Evidence, including the suspect vehicle, was recovered and several individuals were transported to the Warren Police Department to be interviewed,” police said in a news release.

Police said it appears the victim knew his assailant or assailants and described the shooting at a “targeted attack.”

No one is currently in custody.

“The U.S. Postal Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting with this ongoing investigation,” police said.

The Postal Inspection Service said it is offering a reward up to $250,000 for info leading to the killer’s arrest.

The likely Hall-of-Famer sat down wearing a sleeveless Eagles t-shirt to explain his decision while thanking those who had helped him along the way, including parents Ed and Donna, younger brother Travis and wife Kylie.

ESPN first reported that Kelce planned to retire following the team’s January loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in this year’s playoffs. After the Eagles were knocked out of contention, Kelce made more headlines for fully enjoying his younger brother’s third run to a championship.

“I have been the underdog my entire career,” Kelce said. “And I mean this when I say it, I still wish I was. Few things gave me more joy than proving someone wrong. I relished doubters. They fueled a fire within.”

During his speech, Kelce did not specify what his next steps would be.

“I don’t know what’s next,” the “New Heights” podcast host said.

“That’s all I got,” he said before getting up and hugging his family.

The incident occurred without any warning Saturday night in Monticello, in Sullivan County, around 11 p.m., shortly after a family had moved into the house.

“I was laying down and all of a sudden the whole house went boom and shook. [We] ran out the door,” Harold Ronk told NBC News.

Several family members reported smelling gas before the blast.

Nine people and two pets managed to escape, but one person required hospitalization with burns. They were taken to Garnet Health Medical Center in Wallkill in unknown condition.

There was no active fire when first responders arrived, but walls had crumbled, windows were blown out and the foundation was cracked.

Firefighters traced the cause of the blast to two 100-gallon propane tanks in the basement.

“The gas line had started leaking and had filled the basement up with gas and then exploded,” Jon Wells, assistant chief of the Monticello Fire Department, said.

It’s unclear how full the tanks were before the incident. The building was condemned as unsafe by inspectors after the explosion.

“About an hour ago we were moving stuff in. Now we can’t get our stuff out because it’s condemned,” Ronk told NBC New York.

Three people were seriously injured in a similar house explosion in Kiamesha Lake, also in Sullivan County, in Oct. 2023. That blast was also caused by a propane leak.
