The victims ranged in age from 15 to 17, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel confirmed during a press conference.

One 16-year-old boy sustained nine gunshot wounds to the torso and has been listed in critical condition, Philadelphia police said. The seven other victims suffered gunshots to various parts of their bodies, including the back, chest, arms, legs and buttocks, and are said to be in stable condition.

Police believe the shots were fired by gunman in a dark blue Hyundai parked near a Dunkin Donuts in the Burholme neighborhood just before 3 p.m. Three people wearing masks were seen on surveillance video getting out of the vehicle and opening fire at a group of students at the bus stop.

The vehicle fled away from the scene and the suspects are still at large.

Wednesday’s shooting happened near Northeast High School and Crossan Elementary School. The high school students had just been dismissed for the day when the gunplay began, officials said.

Authorities later confirmed at least 30 shots had been fired.

Transportation officials said two busses, Route 18 and Route 67, were also hit by bullets during the afternoon shooting, but no passengers onboard were known to be hurt.

Wednesday’s shooting marks the fourth time this week violence had erupted at a SEPTA location.

Cops said a man was shot and killed on a Route 79 bus in South Philadelphia Tuesday night. A 17-year-old high school student died and four other people were injured when at least one gunman with an automatic weapon opened fire at a bus stop Monday. And on Sunday, a 27-year-old bus passenger was fatally shot during an altercation.

Wednesday’s incident is said to have occurred while SEPTA Police Chief Chuck Lawson was in Philadelphia City Hall meeting with police and other city officials to discuss the recent shootings in the city, according to Fox29’s Steve Keeley.

Long Island park body parts case: multiple arrests reported https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/05/babylon-long-island-body-parts-arrests/ Tue, 05 Mar 2024 17:24:44 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7562163 Multiple people are reportedly in custody in connection to body parts found in Long Island’s Southard Pond Park in Babylon last week.

The news was reported Tuesday, the same day more remains were discovered roughly 4 miles away in a wooded area across from 103 Lakeway Drive in West Babylon. Additional human remains were found Tuesday in Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, about 10 miles from Southard Pond Park.

Authorities said the remains in all three locations appear to belong to the same two victims.

Possible suspects were taken into custody Tuesday morning in Amityville, News12 Long Island and 1010 Wins both said.

Suffolk County Police did not confirm those reports to the Daily News by Tuesday evening, but did say a search was conducted Monday night at 25 Railroad Avenue in Amityville. No human remains were found during that search.

ABC News reported four people were questioned in the Amityville home, and at least two arrests have been made.

Cops began their investigation last Thursday when a girl on her way to school found a man’s tattooed arm outside Southard Pond Park. Its fingertips were missing.

A subsequent search of the park turned up his other arm, as well as the head, arm and leg of a female victim.

The woman, 59 years old, has been identified, Suffolk County Police said Tuesday night. Her identity is otherwise being kept confidential, pending the notification of her family.

The man “has been tentatively identified and was 53 years old,” police added.

Their last known address was the same location in Yonkers.

Law enforcement does not believe the situation indicates an ongoing threat to the public.

Richard Lewis’ official cause of death confirmed days after comedian’s passing https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/02/richard-lewis-cause-of-death-cardiopulmonary-arrest/ Sat, 02 Mar 2024 22:41:13 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7557254 Richard Lewis’ official cause of death has been confirmed just days after the comedian’s passing at the age of 76.

The “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star died as a result of cardiopulmonary arrest — also known as cardiac or circulatory arrest — at 9:22 p.m. on Feb. 27 at his home in Los Angeles, according to his death certificate obtained by The Blast.

The document reportedly notes Parkinson’s disease as a secondary cause of death. Lewis announced his Parkinson’s diagnosis last April, along with his plan to retire from stand-up comedy.

A progressive disorder, Parkinson’s affects the nervous system as well as parts of the body controlled by nerves, according to The Mayo Clinic. It can lead to stiffness and slowing of movement.

Born in Brooklyn in 1947, Lewis first shot to fame in the comedy world the early 1970s. Known for his trademark neurotic and self-deprecating style, his act often touched on subjects like his alcohol abuse and struggles with mental health.

By 1975, publications including the Daily News were naming Lewis among the “new breed” of comedians, alongside the likes of Richard Pryor, George Carlin and Andy Kaufman.

In his later years, however, he became known to younger generations for his guest-starring role on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” alongside lifelong friend Larry David — playing semi-fictionalized and exaggerated versions of themselves.

Lewis appeared in more than 40 episodes of the series over 24 years, including the 2000 pilot.

David, who both stars in and created the HBO sitcom, released a heartbreaking tribute to Lewis this week.

“Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me,” said the “Seinfeld” co-creator. “He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”

Lewis, who was open about his 30-year sobriety, was also praised for his tireless devotion to helping others get clean.

“Richard Lewis helped people laugh and he helped people heal through his tireless, indefatigable belief in sobriety,” actress Jamie Lee Curtis wrote on Instagram. “The laughs may stop but the healing never does. It’s the power of recovery and fellowship and solidarity, and it’s available everywhere all at once. A phone call away. Rest in the knowledge that you helped people, Richard. First of all, me.”

Lewis is survived by his wife, Joyce Lapinsky, to whom he was married since 2005.

NYC fashion icon Iris Apfel dead at 102 https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/01/iris-apfel-dead-nyc-fashion-icon/ Sat, 02 Mar 2024 01:58:34 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7220147 New York City interior designer, businesswoman and fashion icon Iris Apfel died Friday at her home in Palm Beach, Fla. She was 102 years old.

Representatives confirmed her passing but did not announce an official cause of death.

Born Iris Barrel on Aug. 29, 1921, the Astoria, Queens native would later become known for her irreverent fashion sense, bold eyewear and oversized jewelry.

As a young woman, she studied art history at New York University, after which she worked as a copywriter for Women’s Wear Daily and later as an interior design assistant.

In 1948, she wed Carl Apfel, to whom she stayed married for 67 years until his death in 2015. Together, the Apfels ran a textile business in Long Island City for more than four decades, specializing in fabric reproductions from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Among their many high-profile clients, the Apfels’ Old World Weavers contracted with the White House for nine presidencies. Apfel’s work as a White House decorator included collaboration on Jacqueline Kennedy’s renovation and restoration of the First Family’s official residence.

Before and after the Kennedy administration, the Apfels’ White House work was mostly in replicating historical fabrics, but Mrs. Kennedy wanted a different approach for her renovation.

“She employed a very famous Parisian designer to gussy up the house and make it a real Frenchie, and the design community went bananas,” Apfel reflected in 2015. “After that, we had to throw it all out and start again.”

In 2005, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute curated an exhibition about Apfel’s style called Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Apfel Collection. It was the first time the institute put on an exhibition for a living person who wasn’t a fashion designer. The show was so successful, it toured several museums.

Apfel was also the subject of “Iris,” the final documentary by Albert Maysles, who with his brother directed the 1970 Rolling Stones doc “Gimme Shelter” and cult classic “Grey Gardens.”

She also appeared in the 2017 documentary “If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast,” alongside many other famous people over 90, including Carl Reiner, Betty White and Dick Van Dyke.

Though the Apfels retired from the textile business in 1992, in her final years, Apfel partnered with many brands on fashion, furniture and home decor collections.

She also enjoyed social media fame late in life, amassing nearly 3 million followers on Instagram, where her bio proclaims, “More is more and less is a bore.

In the wake of Apfel’s death, fans and fellow fashion stars flooded social media with tributes.

“You mastered the art of living. Thank you for your energy and inspiration,” Lenny Kravitz wrote on the Instagram post announcing her death.

“She truly did it all,” said former First Lady of California Maria Shriver. “She was a businesswoman, she was a fashion model, she was a fashion icon, she was a college professor, she was a star of a documentary, she was a Barbie doll! Iris is truly proof that age is just a number, and that we only have one life, so we all need to get living.”

Designer Tommy Hilfiger meanwhile remembered Apfel as “a world-famous fashion icon because of her incredible talent not only as an artist, but as an influencer.”

“She has had an amazing effect on so many people with her huge heart and magic touch,” he said. “She will go down in history as an innovator and a leader in the world of textiles, style and innovation!”

Who is Jeremiah Brent? Meet the new ‘Queer Eye’ design expert following Bobby Berk’s exit https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/27/who-is-jeremiah-brent-queer-eye-bobby-berk-replacement/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 23:16:20 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7546892 The latest iteration of the Fab Five has a fresh new face onboard.

Roughly three months after the news that “Queer Eye” design expert Bobby Berk would be leaving the series after season 8, Netflix has announced that Jeremiah Brent will be stepping in to replace him.

The new interior designer will join long-time castmates Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski and Jonathan Van Ness for season 9 of the Emmy Award-winning series, which is set to be filmed in Las Vegas.

But who is Jeremiah Brent and where might you have seen him before?

Who is Jeremiah Brent?

Brent, whose birth name is Jeremy Clevenger Johnson, is a design industry superstar hailing from Modesto, Calif.

The self-taught interior decorator first made a splash in the world of reality TV as a styling associate on season 4 of Bravo’s “The Rachel Zoe Project.” Years later, he hosted the Emmy Award-winning “Home Made Simple” for two seasons on the Oprah Winfrey Network and starred in TLC’s “Nate & Jeremiah by Design” alongside his husband, fellow interior designer Nate Berkus.

Berkus and Brent — the first same-sex couple to be featured in ads for Banana Republic — were married in 2014 and are the parents of 8-year-old daughter Poppy and 5-year-old son Oskar, both of whom were born via egg donors and surrogates.

In 2011 — the same year he appeared on “The Rachel Zoe Project” — Brent founded design firm Jeremiah Brent Design (JBD), with offices in Manhattan and Los Angeles.

“My personal design aesthetic is monastic, but obviously, we don’t do just that with the firm,” he told Architectural Digest in 2022.

Why did Bobby Berk leave ‘Queer Eye”?

Following the premiere of “Queer Eye” in 2018, Berk quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his stunning home makeovers and compassionate conversations. So it came as a surprise to fans when the 42-year-old Houston native announced in November that he was departing the show after season 8, which dropped Jan. 24 on Netflix.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I announce that Season 8 will be my final season on ‘Queer Eye,’” Berk wrote on social media. “It’s not been an easy decision to be at peace with, but a necessary one. Although my journey with ‘Queer Eye’ is over, my journey with you is not. You will be seeing more of me very soon.”

Berk elaborated on his departure in a recent profile for Vanity Fair, saying he thought the show had come to an end after they had completed the contract they initially signed.

“We thought we were done [after September 2022],” he said. “Mentally and emotionally, I thought we all moved on. I know I did, and I started planning other things.”

But then, after nearly a year had passed, Netflix decided to renew the show, with a contract that required a commitment of up to four seasons. Having already made other plans, Berk decided not to sign while his fellow castmates did.

“We just assumed that the show wouldn’t come back if we all didn’t come back,” he said.

Berk also confirmed rumors of a rift with fashion expert Tan France.

“Tan and I had a moment. There was a situation, and that’s between Tan and I, and it has nothing to do with the show,” he told Vanity Fair. “It was something personal that had been brewing — and nothing romantic, just to clarify that.”

How to watch “Queer Eye”?

All six episodes of the current season of “Queer Eye” — filmed in New Orleans — are streaming now on Netflix, along with all previous seasons of the series. There’s no word yet on when season 9 will premiere.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce criticized by PETA for visit to Sydney Zoo https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/22/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-tour-sydney-zoo/ Thu, 22 Feb 2024 15:41:34 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7536181 Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce spent the day touring the Sydney Zoo on Thursday, just after the Super Bowl champ arrived in Australia to join his girlfriend on the Sydney leg of her Eras Tour.

But while some were excited to see the couple enjoying such a wholesome date, PETA had a different opinion — even using Swift’s own lyrics to suggest she be more mindful of where she spends her time.

“While we understand all too well the appeal of seeing Australia’s wildlife, PETA hopes that next time Taylor and Travis want to see wild animals, they’ll spend their time and money at a true sanctuary,” Debbie Metzler, PETA’s Director of Captive Animal Welfare, said in a statement to TMZ.

The 14-time Grammy winner and Kansas City Chiefs tight end, both 34, embarked on a “private tour” of the zoo, where Swift had also been seen the day before, local outlet news.com.au reports.

PETA specifically called attention to the fact that the lovers were photographed feeding a kangaroo during their visit. The animal rights organization said those who wish to see wildlife should instead support sanctuaries, where guests are required to keep a respectful distance and are not allowed to feed or touch the animals.

Swift and Kelce were seen visiting various animal exhibitions just hours after Kelce landed in Sydney, where Swift will perform this weekend. It’s her second stop in Oz after the Melbourne leg of her international Eras Tour last week.

Before it was confirmed that Kelce was traveling to see the popstar, his father addressed speculation about his youngest son’s plans now that the NFL season is done.

Ed Kelce told the Sydney Morning Herald that he asked whether his son was “going to take off for Sydney” following his team’s win at Super Bowl LVIII.

“He seemed keen,” the elder Kelce told the outlet. “He said he’d really like to see Sydney and Singapore, but he wasn’t sure because he has commitments. He is at a celebrity charity golf outing today, which, I think, is in Las Vegas.”

Swift is slated to hit the stage in Singapore the first two weekends of March. While it’s unclear if Kelce will join her in Asia, he’s no stranger to dancing along to her tunes in the VIP section, having accompanied her in South America for concerts late last year.

Body of missing sheriff’s deputy found after patrol car discovered in river with another body inside https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/15/meigs-county-tn-deputy-missing-patrol-car-pulled-from-river-body/ Fri, 16 Feb 2024 01:38:29 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7523304 A search for a missing Tennessee deputy came to an end Thursday night, hours after his patrol car was found in a river with another body inside, officials confirmed.

Authorities announced the body of Meigs County Deputy Robert “R.J.” Leonard, who was previously reported missing, had been pulled from the Tennessee River around 6:30 p.m. local time. His body was being transported to Knoxville as the investigation continued.

Leonard was last seen on Wednesday evening before responding to a call of a disturbance around the Birchwood Community, in the southern part of the state, The Tennessean reported. He made an arrest after arriving on the scene and was last heard from on his way to the jail.

On Thursday, Leonard’s patrol car was found upside down in the Tennessee River, with the trunk blown open from the pressure of the water, District Attorney General Russell Johnson said at a press conference.

The body of a woman was also found in the backseat covered in “a lot of mud,” Johnson said, adding she’s believed to be the person Leonard arrested Wednesday night but could not confirm her identity.

While no body was found in the front seat of the vehicle, the driver’s side window had been rolled down. Multiple agencies joined in the search of the river and surrounding areas for signs of Deputy Leonard.

The deputy was in his first year serving with the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office, and had sent a one-word text message to his wife on Wednesday night that simply read, “Arrest.” It’s unclear what the reported disturbance was, what the deputy found when he arrived or why he made his arrest.

Due to poor service in the heavily wooded area where Leonard was driving, officers said they couldn’t make out what he said over dispatch on his way toward the jail. However, through the use of voice analysis tools, investigators were later able to pick up a single word — “water” — which they believe Leonard said into his radio communication.

Before discovering Leonard’s body, Johnson earlier said that while the investigation was ongoing, officials didn’t “think the outcome is going to be good for Deputy Leonard.”

“We always hope it’s a rescue … but we also have to face the facts that are in front of us,” added Hamilton County Sheriff Austin Garrett. “We won’t lose hope for the fact that we could still recover him. It’s plain to see that he made it out of the car.”

Meigs County Sheriff Jackie Melton told the Tennessean that Leonard had only been on the force about two months.

NYC man charged with falsely claiming ownership of New Yorker Hotel, using loophole to live rent-free for 5 years https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/15/mickey-barreto-charged-false-ownership-new-yorker-hotel/ Fri, 16 Feb 2024 00:31:16 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7523215 A 48-year-old alleged fraudster has been charged with repeatedly filing false property records claiming ownership of the New Yorker Hotel, in which he lived rent-free for five years using a housing law loophole.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on Wednesday announced the indictment of Mickey Barreto, who Bragg claims filed paperwork stating he owned the 100-year-old building and got so far as discussing proprietorship with the chain that operates the Art Deco masterpiece.

The saga began in June 2018 when Barreto, who had just moved to New York from Los Angeles, booked a room for a single night at the New Yorker, the D.A.’s office said.

Barreto then requested the hotel “enter into a lease agreement with him for the room pursuant to New York’s rent stabilization law,” the D.A. said.

Barreto’s boyfriend had reportedly informed him about a loophole in the city’s housing law that allows single-room occupants of buildings constructed before 1969 to demand a six-month lease. Barreto claimed that because he had paid for a night in the hotel, he should be considered a tenant.

The hotel declined that offer, reclaimed the room and returned the suspect’s goods to him. But after Barreto filed a wrongful eviction lawsuit, he was granted him use of room when lawyers for the building’s owners didn’t show up to court.

According to The Associated Press, Barreto lived in the hotel for free until July 2023, because the owners didn’t want to negotiate a lease but couldn’t legally kick him out.

But prosecutors say Barreto took things too far when in May 2019, when he allegedly uploaded fake property documents onto the New York City Department of Finance’s Automated City Register Information System (ACRIS). Those records reportedly included a manufactured deed claiming that the Holy Spirit Association Unification of World Christianity — a global religious organization that owns the prized real estate — had transferred the property to Barreto.

After that, he allegedly presented himself as the hotel’s owner and even attempted to collect rent from other tenants.

Baretto reportedly argued that the judge who granted him access to the room indirectly gave him ownership of the entire building because it had never been subdivided.

“Barreto also contacted the hotel’s franchisor, Wyndham, and began talks to have the franchise transferred to him,” Bragg’s office claims.

The New York County Supreme Court ordered the defendant to stop presenting himself as the hotel’s owner, which he allegedly ignored. Twice in 2023, he filed additional false documents onto ACRIS in an attempt to secure ownership of the property, according to prosecutors.

“As alleged, Mickey Barreto repeatedly and fraudulently claimed ownership of one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, the New Yorker Hotel,” Bragg said in a statement. “We will not tolerate manipulation of our city’s property records by those who seek to scam the system for personal gain.”

Barreto has been charged with 14 counts of offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, and 10 counts of misdemeanor criminal contempt.

Gunfire after Kansas City Chiefs parade leaves 1 dead, at least 22 wounded https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/14/kansas-city-shootingchiefs-parade-union-station/ Wed, 14 Feb 2024 20:47:35 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7521344 One person was killed and at least 22 others were wounded, including 11 children, when gunfire rang out in downtown Kansas City following the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade.

“I’m angry at what happened today,” Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves told reporters after Wednesday’s shooting, warning the number of casualties could rise.

Earlier in the day, police urged citizens to stay clear of Union Station, where gunfire erupted near a parking garage around 2 p.m. local time.

Two people were immediately taken into custody for questioning, though Graves later confirmed that number had been increased to three. She did not share any details about those detained or a possible motive for the shootings.

“This investigation is just beginning,” Graves said as sirens blared throughout her press conference.

Less than an hour before the shootings, authorities reopened pedestrian crossings that had been closed for the parade celebrating the Kansas City Chief’s second-consecutive NFL championship. It’s unclear if the violence was directly connected to the parade.

Swathes of people in Chiefs colors were moving around outside Union Station at the time the shooting began. Social media users posted videos of police running through the crowded scene as people scrambled to find cover.

As of Wednesday evening, it was unknown how many shots were fired or exactly how many shooters were involved.

Ambulances were seen racing toward Children’s Mercy Hospital, where local station KMBC reported 11 children were being treated, including nine gunshot victims. Their ages are said to range between 6 and 15 years old, and the hospital reported all of the children are expected to survive.

Other victims were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital and Truman Medical Center. Kansas City Fire Chief Ross Grundyson described only six of the total injuries as “minor,” while eight were “immediately life-threatening.”

The person killed in the bloodshed was later identified as Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a local radio DJ and married mother of two in her mid 40s. She was reported to have died during surgery for a gunshot wound to her abdomen, according to the Kansas City Star.

Police chief Graves earlier said she had heard Chiefs fans helped apprehend someone believed to be involved in the violence, but wasn’t able to confirm that information.

Video shared on social media showed a group of people tackling and holding down a potential suspect before police arrived to manage the situation. That footage appears to show a long, AR-style rifle in the vicinity.

Police were trying to determine if the person being subdued in that video is one of the three individuals police have in custody. MSNBC spoke to two witnesses who claimed they saw a “real young” man, possibly around 17 years old, involved in whatever was unfolding.

City Manager Brian Platt on Tuesday assured public radio station WCUR that they were “more than ready” to keep Kansas City residents safe during Wednesday’s festivities, while indicating the presence of pop superstar Taylor Swift would present additional challenges.

Swift, who’s dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, skipped the parade and flew to Australia, where she’s scheduled to perform Friday night.

“I am heartbroken over the tragedy that took place today,” Kelce wrote on X. “My heart is with all who came out to celebrate with us and have been affected. KC, you mean the world to me.”

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas similarly said law enforcement was prepared for the parade.

“We’re enchanted to welcome everyone to tomorrow’s parade and the women and men of our police department are prepared to keep all safe,” he posted Tuesday on social media. Over 800 police officers were on scene at the time of the shootings.

Lucas told reporters on Wednesday he too was angry the parade was marred by violence.

“I am as heartbroken as anybody,” he said. “I hope we bring whoever did this is to justice.”

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson was at the parade with his wife, Teresa.

“This was a tragic conclusion to a celebration we had all looked forward to — none more than Teresa and me,” he said in a statement. “The First Lady and I were present when shots broke out. Thanks to the professionalism of our security officers and first responders, Teresa and I and our staff are safe and secure.”

Chiefs quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes said on social media he was “praying for Kansas City.”

The team later confirmed that “all of our players, coaches, staff and their families are safe and accounted for.”

The shooting came on the sixth anniversary of the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., which claimed the lives of 17 people.

President Biden noted that anniversary in calling yet again for a ban on assault weapons.

“Today’s events should move us, shock us, shame us into acting,” he said in a statement. “What are we waiting for? What else do we need to see? How many more families need to be torn apart?”

Biden also called for a limit to high-capacity magazines and strengthened background checks for gun purchasers.

“We know what we have to do, we just need the courage to do it,” the president said. “Jill and I pray for those killed and injured today in Kansas City, and for our country to find the resolve to end this senseless epidemic of gun violence tearing us at the seams.”

3 D.C. officers shot, suspect surrenders after hours-long barricade situation https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/14/dc-police-officer-shot-roads-closed/ Wed, 14 Feb 2024 15:25:57 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7520655 Three police officers were shot Wednesday morning while attempting to make an animal cruelty arrest, sparking an hours-long barricade situation in a residential area of Southeast D.C., the Metropolitan Police Department said.

The incident began around 7:30 a.m. when officers with the criminal apprehension unit responded to a home in the 5000 block of Hanna Place SE to serve an arrest warrant for cruelty to animals.

“Our officers attempted to make contact with the individual inside the residence to execute the arrest warrant [but] the individual refused to come outside,” Police Chief Pamela Smith told reporters in a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

“As officers attempted to gain entry, the individual fired upon them,” Smith said, adding the male suspect continued to fire as he barricaded himself inside the home.

The three officers were taken to local hospitals with injuries that “appear[ed] to be non-life-threatening,” the union representing D.C.’s officers, detectives and sergeants posted on social media just after 8 a.m. A fourth officer was also injured and transported to a hospital, but had not been shot.

D.C. Police Union Chairman Gregg Pemberton later said one officer took two rounds to the chest, which were stopped by his bulletproof vest. Two other officers were shot in their lower legs. All three will survive their injuries.

After nearly 13 hours, during which the suspect continued to barricade himself inside the home and periodically “fire from that location,” the Metropolitan Police Department announced he had surrendered to police around 8:30 p.m.

Chief Smith cited the work of crisis negotiators who maintained ongoing communication with the suspect throughout the day.

As of Wednesday night, the shooter had not been publicly identified and it was unclear if he was alone in the home at the time of the incident.
